The series is based on three novellas by George R.R. Martin, known as the ‘Dunk and Egg’ stories. These tales have been collected in the book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The first season of the show will adapt the first novella. It will tell the story of how Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) became companions. They first met at a tournament in Ashford Meadow, where Dunk became a hedge knight and Egg joined him as his squire. Their initial adventure together takes them to Dorne, a location familiar to Game of Thrones fans.
