As inflation, tariffs, and surging costs ripple through the economy, many Americans are finding that the price of simply existing has grown unsustainable, as per a BuzzFeed report. From the grocery store to the movie theatre, everyday items and experiences that once felt accessible are now stretching budgets to the breaking point, according to the report.

In a recent viral thread on social media platform Reddit, a user named Drakey504 posed a simple question: "What’s become so expensive that it’s no longer worth buying?", according to BuzzFeed. The answers revealed just how deeply the financial squeeze is being felt across the country.

Streaming Services Lose Their Appeal

According to the report, streaming services, once seen as a cheaper, ad-free alternative to cable, are losing fans. Users like KyleCXVII say they’ve shifted back to renting movies to avoid paying for unused subscriptions, as per BuzzFeed. For user PenguinTheYeti, it’s the presence of ads that defeats the entire purpose of paying for a service, as per the report.

Fast Food Is No Longer Fast or Cheap

Multiple users agreed that fast food has lost its appeal, as per BuzzFeed. A user named Efficient_Advice_380 responded to the question, saying, “Fast food,” while, Narrow_Tennis_2803 added, “Fast food's big attractions were that it was fast and cheap. It is neither nowadays," quoted BuzzFeed. Tvelt17 echoed the sentiment, saying, "I could get a better burger and a beer at 15 different places for like $5 more, if that," as quoted in the report.

Smoking Comes at a High Price

WeirdConnections, who works at a smoke shop, revealed a single pack of cigarettes can cost nearly $20 after tax, as per the report. Former smokers like Bender_2024 attributed the high costs to helping them quit smoking, "I'm saving about $400 a month by quitting smoking. The financial side of it really helped me quit. That's why I say if you want people not to smoke, keep on taxing the hell out of it. You won't get a ton of long-time smokers to quit, but you'll absolutely keep the next generation from smoking if it costs too much to start," quoted BuzzFeed.
