The transformation relied on soaked cardboard, organic material and mulch, followed by paths and a mixture of plants intended to benefit wildlife as well as people. The approach created a more layered garden while avoiding the need to dig out the entire lawn.
Turning grass into a garden
The project used a technique known as sheet mulching, sometimes called sheet composting or lasagna gardening. The first step was placing wet cardboard over the grass, followed by organic material and a substantial layer of mulch.As per the University of Florida, covering the existing vegetation prevents sunlight from reaching grass and weeds, helping suppress them without chemical treatment. As the materials gradually break down, they can also add organic matter to the soil.
UF/IFAS recommends using plain, uncoated cardboard and removing tape and labels before installation. Moisture is also important because cardboard that dries out can interfere with the transition rather than breaking down properly.
Could less lawn mean less irrigation?
A lawn-free landscape can potentially change household water use, but the result depends on how the replacement landscape is designed.The Environmental Protection Agency says outdoor activities account for around 30% of water consumption at the average U.S. single-family home, with outdoor use representing a much larger share in some hotter and drier areas.
Florida research offers an indication of what thoughtful landscaping can achieve. A 29-month study involving 27 central Florida homes found that properties with reduced turf, larger planted areas, microirrigation and seasonally adjusted watering used 39% less irrigation water than conventional landscapes.
When those homes were watered twice each week, the estimated reduction amounted to approximately 1,440 to 1,800 gallons per week.
“Native” does not automatically mean drought-proof
There is an important qualification to the idea of creating a low-water landscape with native plants.UF/IFAS researchers note that whether a plant is native does not, by itself, determine its irrigation or fertilizer requirements. A residential property can have very different soil, drainage, sunlight and root conditions from the environment in which a plant naturally occurs.
Even plants that are expected to become relatively low-maintenance can require additional water while becoming established.
Giving pollinators a reason to stay
A productive pollinator landscape needs to offer resources over an extended period.The U.S. Forest Service recommends using several types of plants with flowering periods extending from early spring into late fall. Clustering plants, including regional native species and providing host plants for butterfly caterpillars can increase the habitat's value.
Plant diversity can also benefit other insects and native wildlife. Different plant shapes and structures provide opportunities for feeding and shelter, while limiting inappropriate pesticide use can help protect beneficial organisms.
Low maintenance still requires care
The finished landscape may reduce some routine lawn work, but it does not eliminate gardening altogether.New vegetation needs water while roots become established, weeds can still appear in open spaces, and organic mulch gradually decomposes. Paths, borders and planting areas also require occasional attention.
The difference is that maintaining individual garden areas can replace some of the repeated mowing and lawn management associated with a conventional grass-covered yard.
