"Sadly, we all love Lone Star, but the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work," Murphy revealed.

The issue stems from Disney's 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which included the 20th Century Fox film and television studios but excluded the Fox Network. While 9-1-1 and its spin-off Lone Star continued to air on Fox, the arrangement was less than ideal.

Fox Network had little incentive to continue broadcasting a show owned by Disney, which couldn’t leverage the series for its own platforms like Disney+. This created a lose-lose situation, forcing 9-1-1: Lone Star off the air despite its success.

He confirmed that the cast and crew were well aware that the fifth season would likely be the last, which influenced how they approached the storytelling. Despite the end of 9-1-1: Lone Star, fans of the franchise can still look forward to new content. The original 9-1-1 series, now airing on ABC after being canceled by Fox, continues to thrive. The show’s eighth season premiered on September 27, 2024, and remains a ratings success, attracting millions of viewers.

Murphy also hinted at the potential for more 9-1-1 spin-offs. "Tim Minear and I are working on a new spin-off that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall," he said. Though Murphy remained tight-lipped about the location and premise of the new series, he expressed excitement about its potential.

"Now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love."
