50 years on, why haven’t humans been back to the moon? Know here

The last footprint left on the moon was on December 14, 1972. After 50 years, NASA is planning to get ready to go back.

As part of the Apollo 11 mission, it has been 50 years since people set foot on the moon for the first time on July 20, 1969. After that, there were six more trips to the moon, and five of them were successful. Future Apollo expeditions, however, were cancelled in 1970, and the Apollo 17 mission in 1972 became the last manned journey to the Moon.

The 12-day mission, which took place from December 7 and 19, set records for the longest spacewalk, the longest lunar landing, and the biggest lunar samples returned to Earth. It has been 50 years since the last man departed the moon.

So, why haven't they sent humans back to the moon yet?

The two primary causes are money and priorities. The race to put people on the moon was sparked in 1962 by US President John F. Kennedy's 'We Choose to Go to the Moon' address, in which he pledged that by the end of the decade, an American would walk on the moon’.

After that promise was realized with the Apollo moon landing in 1969, Nasa faced significant financial cuts, thereby ending the Apollo program.

The original objective of this mission was to test Orion's heat shield in preparation for the day when it will carry astronauts. The success of this mission was critical for NASA, which has invested tens of billions of dollars in the Artemis programme, which would return people to the Moon and prepare them for an eventual voyage to Mars.
