An earthquake has shaken the people of Shasta County in the U.S. state of California. The epicenter is located 50 miles away from Redding.

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit Shasta County Friday morning. Confirming the quake, the United States Geological Survey has said that it hit the area at 10:24 a.m. and had its epicenter at Cassel, about 50 miles northeast of Redding. Shasta County is a county located in the northern part of the U.S. state of California.

The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 9.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Redding, Shasta County, California. The USGS said that shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. It also said that the exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours.
