'3 Body Problem': Release date, star cast and where to watch sci-fi adaptation

Based on the novels by Beijing-based writer Liu Cixin, '3 Body Problem' is a science fiction that follows a secret science program; explores an alien species in a solar system beyond the stars; and develops a strange video game depicting the rise and fall of great civilizations over thousands of years. The time jumps, philosophical dilemmas and explorations of scientific theory, all are set in a ripple effect started by the Chinese Revolution.

Scientific breakthrough

Developed for Netflix by Eric Heisserer, '3 Body Problem' revolves around astrophysics student Ye Wenjie who helplessly watches her father being mercilessly lynched by paramilitary forces. In an attempt to escape punishment, she joins a military program in Mongolia on the condition that she will never leave the base. Resigned to fate, Ye Wenjie dedicates her life to research under a giant parabolic antenna and develops a scientific breakthrough that leads to the broadcasting of a high-powered radio signal into deep space.

Release Date

While Netflix announced the production of this sci-fi show in 2020, China made its adaptation and released it in 2023. The Netflix adaptation will be a little bit different as it has been filmed in the UK and not in China.


According to 'Collider' Netflix will premiere '3 Body Problem' on March 21, 2024. The premiere will be accompanied by a podcast, hosted by writer Jason Concepcion and British space scientist and educator Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock.

The star ensemble of '3 Body Problem' includes 'Game of Thrones' fame Liam Cunningham and Benedict Wong known for playing Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 'Doctor Strange'. Marlo Kelly, Jess Hong, Saamer Usmami, Jovan Adepo, and Shea Shimooka have also featured in the sci-fi movie.
