2024 Atlantic hurricane names, state-wise prediction, forecast for season

Colorado State University's (CSU) inaugural forecast for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has predicted a busy season and named more than 20 storms. The predictions also include forecast for states, as per a report in Fox Weather.

Name of these storms are - Alberto, Helene, Oscar, Beryl, Isaac, Patty, Chris, Joyce, Rafael, Debby, Kirk, Sara, Ernesto, Leslie, Tony, Francine, Milton, Valerie, Gordon, Nadine, and Wlliam, Fox weather reported.

2024 tropical cyclone impact probability is higher in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, as per the report.


Dr. Phil Klotzbach, an esteemed senior research scientist at Colorado State University, has unveiled his projections for the 2024 hurricane season, forecasting as many as 23 storms. Of these, 11 are poised to escalate into hurricanes, boasting winds surpassing the 75 mph threshold. He also predicted that nearly half of these cyclonic disturbances could burgeon into major storms, boasting winds exceeding 115 mph.

An average hurricane season produces 14 named storms, of which seven lead to hurricanes and three become major cyclones.

Last year, there were three major hurricanes that formed among seven hurricanes and 20 named storms, the fourth greatest number of named storms since 1950. The most damaging, Idalia, tore up the west coast of Florida and made landfall as a category 3 hurricane.

CSU's forecast is in line with other initial outlooks. Last week, AccuWeather said there was a 10-15% chance of 30 or more named storms in the 2024 hurricane season, which begins June 1 and runs to November 30.
