Joran van der Sloot, the primary suspect in the 2005 vanishing of Natalee Holloway, pleaded guilty to federal extortion charges on Wednesday, resulting in a 20-year prison sentence. As part of the plea deal, van der Sloot committed to disclosing information about Holloway's disappearance to her mother, Beth Holloway.

During a partial transcript of a proffer meeting with prosecutors on October 3, van der Sloot admitted to assaulting Natalee Holloway on a beach, utilizing a cinderblock to bludgeon her face, and disposing of her body in the ocean. He recounted the events leading up to the tragic incident, including an altercation with Holloway, which resulted in her unconscious state and subsequent demise.

In court, while van der Sloot apologized to both the Holloway family and his own, Beth Holloway confronted him, asserting that he had finally admitted to the murder of her daughter. She demanded the maximum possible sentence for him.

Despite the confession, the judge declared that van der Sloot's acknowledgment in the Natalee Holloway case could not be utilized against him. The judge handed him a 20-year prison term, to be served concurrently with his Peruvian sentence. Additionally, van der Sloot was ordered to provide restitution to Beth Holloway.

Van der Sloot, initially pleading not guilty to the charges, was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2010 for attempting to extort money from the Holloway family in exchange for information about Natalee's whereabouts. His vacillating statements about the night of the incident led to his extradition from Peru, where he was serving a 28-year sentence for another murder.

Following the conclusion of the court proceedings, Beth Holloway expressed a sense of relief, stating that she had finally obtained the answers she had been seeking for the past 18 years.
