Glass bottles are one of the most common forms of household and commercial waste. Although glass can be recycled repeatedly, practical and economic challenges can prevent used bottles from reaching recycling facilities. In some places, the material ends up in landfills simply because there is no nearby market or affordable way to process it.

A project in New Orleans is taking a different approach. Instead of treating unwanted bottles as waste, two college students developed a way to crush them into sand and gravel and put the material to use along Louisiana's vulnerable coastline.

When Old Glass Bottles Become Coastal Sand

Waste does not always have to remain waste. In some cases, an item that appears to have reached the end of its useful life can be transformed into something valuable for another purpose. That is exactly what is happening with discarded glass bottles in New Orleans, where an unusual recycling project is turning bottles into sand and using it to support Louisiana's threatened coastline.


A Different Destination for Old Bottles

Inside a New Orleans warehouse, wine and beer bottles arrive by the crate. A machine breaks them down, and moments later the bottles have become soft, pale sand.

Previously, these bottles went straight to the dump as New Orleans had stopped recycling glass. Two college students believed that this was a waste worth fixing.

They have processed over 3 million pounds of discarded bottles, and another around 100,000 pounds is added to the total every month.

Instead of going to landfill, the glass is processed into clean sand and gravel. A magnet removes stray bottle caps from the material. In this way, the bottles are turned back into something similar to the raw material from which they originally came.

The resulting sand is then put to work.

Almost 20 tons have already been used to help create new marsh at a national wildlife refuge along Louisiana's coast. One founder cited grasses were soon thriving in the freshly created marshland. Other material is utilized to make sandbags that families place around their homes to prepare for storms.

Why Was Glass Being Thrown Away?

The problem was not that glass could not be recycled. New Orleans simply had no easy market for its used bottles.

Glass is heavy, so transporting it over long distances can be expensive. Sending a ton of glass hundreds of miles to a recycling facility can cost more than the material is worth.

For the city, throwing the bottles away became the cheaper choice.

The result was a growing amount of glass in landfills. Americans discard millions of tons of glass every year, and much of that material never gets a second life.

Why Louisiana Needs the Sand

The recycled glass has discovered a purpose in a place experiencing a serious shortage of land.

Louisiana's coast is vanishing fast because of erosion, storms and sinking ground. During the past century, the state has lost an amount of land roughly the size of Delaware.

The disappearing coast is more than a loss of land. Marshes help safeguard New Orleans from storm surge and absorb floodwater. They also offer habitat for shrimp, crabs and birds.

As marshes disappear, coastal regions become more exposed to storms. Wetlands have helped reduce the impact of storm surge during past hurricanes, while every acre that disappears allows future storms to reach farther inland.

That is where the recycled glass sand becomes useful.

The material gives a footing to grab for marsh grass in areas where water and erosion have been steadily taking land away.

Turning Bottles Into Usable Material

The process begins with sorted bottles. They are placed into a grinder that reproduces decades of wave action in a matter of seconds.

Steel screens then separate the crushed glass into different sizes, ranging from fine powder to coarse gravel.

The operation depends on community drop-offs and volunteers who sort the bottles according to color. After processing, the glass sand can be positioned into burlap bags and positioned along eroding sections of shoreline.

One Use for a Much Larger Problem

The recycled glass project cannot repair Louisiana's entire coastline. The scale of coastal land loss is far greater than what this single approach can address. The glass sand is simply one tool among many in a much larger effort.

But it changes what happens to an empty bottle.

Every bottle kept out of the dump represents another small contribution to the effort to rebuild Louisiana's disappearing marshland.
