Tech billionaire Elon Musk has apparently discovered a means to avoid over $2 billion in potential financial penalties, revealed a new report by Senate Democratic committee staffers. The accusations are that Musk employed his leverage over the federal government to protect his companies from several investigations, regulatory proceedings, and potential fines, as per CNBC, citing the report.

According to CNBC, Democrats have claimed that Musk has used his influence to “evade oversight, derail investigations, and make litigation disappear whenever he so chooses—on his terms and at his command.”

Over 65 Investigations Before Donald Trump’s Inauguration

Democratic staff of the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found that before US president Donald Trump was sworn in, Musk and his business ventures, SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, The Boring Company, and his AI startup xAI, were reportedly the subject of more than 65 regulatory or enforcement actions from 11 federal agencies, as per CNBC.

The collective potential financial cost of these probes was put at $2.37 billion, with Tesla potentially facing $1.19 billion in possible fines for supposedly false claims about its autopilot and self-driving capabilities, according to the report.

Neuralink, Musk's brain implant firm, had a potential liability of $281 million related to false representations regarding the danger of its products, as well as possible fines under the Animal Welfare Act, amounting to $1.59 million, reported CNBC.

Democrats Call It Strategic

As per the investigation memo, “The through line connecting many of Mr. Musk’s decisions appears to be self-enrichment and avoiding what he perceives as obstacles to advancing his interests,” quoted CNBC.

The memo also mentioned, “The truth is that the breathtaking scope and scale of benefits Mr. Musk is gaining from his present position may never be known, and that is by design. The silence is strategic, and it is dangerous,” as quoted in the report.

Lawmakers Demand Transparency

The committee’s ranking member, Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, even asked the five Musk-led companies to provide information on the federal investigations they faced before Trump’s inauguration and has requested a rundown of the steps each company has taken to keep Musk’s government work separate from those probes, reported CNBC.

White House Pushes Back

However, the White House dismissed that Musk has used his role in government for “personal or financial gain,” saying “any assertion otherwise is completely false and defamatory,” quoted CNBC.

White House communications director Steven Cheung said, Blumenthal “is clearly suffering from a debilitating and uncurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has wilted his brain,” as quoted in the report.
