1,000 collision warnings per day: Earth's orbit is so crowded that the situation could get dangerously out of control

Recent reports have revealed that the orbit of the earth is getting very much crowded with every passing day and is getting absolutely filled up with space debris. There are various significant companies which are issuing about 1000 collision warn...

Space debris has become a pretty critical issue while endangering satellites and astronauts in the orbit of the earth, reported Business Insider.

According to Business Insider, several and eminent experts have issued an warning that the increasing amount of space junk could eventually lead to catastrophic collisions while potentially triggering an ‘unstoppable chain reaction’ which is known as Kessler syndrome, where the density of debris makes space unusable for future launches. During current times, eminent and renowned companies like Kayhan Space issue around 1,000 collision warnings daily with satellite operators struggling to prioritize these alerts amidst the clutter.

The debris actually includes defunct satellites, spent rocket stages and even small items like tools and gloves that have been left in orbit. Major past incidents such as the collision between an US and a Russian satellite in the year 2009 have created thousands of pieces of hazardous debris, asserted Business Insider.

Although most warnings do not actually result in collisions, but at the same time, when they do occur, they eventually generate even more debris while exacerbating the problem.

NASA and other eminent organizations are advocating for legislation like the ORBITS Act to eventually promote technologies for debris removal and better management of space traffic, noted Business Insider. Also, several experts have put an emphasis on the urgent need for international cooperation to establish binding regulations to mitigate the risks posed by space junk.
