US rice farmers sue Bayer CropScience

German chemicals and pharmaceuticals giant Bayer said that its agrochemicals division, CropScience, was being sued by rice farmers in the US in a fight over genetically modified long-grain rice.

LEVERKUSEN: German chemicals and pharmaceuticals giant Bayer said that its agrochemicals division, CropScience, was being sued by rice farmers in the US in a fight over genetically modified long-grain rice.

“We confirm that a suit has been filed,” a Bayer spokeswoman said, declining to comment any further or reveal any details.

Rice farmers in the US have filed suit alleging that Bayer failed to prevent its GM rice from contaminating their crops.

Because there are tight restrictions on GM crops and products in the EU, the EU has placed strict limits on US rice imports and US rice prices have dropped dramatically as a result, the farmers say.

Last year, the EU imported 198,000 tonnes of long-grain rice from the US, worth e52m ($67m). Both US authorities and Bayer CropScience have found that the rice represented no risk to humans or the environment.
