US House passes bill critical of China

The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling on China to immediately stop abusing its citizens' rights and to end its support for Myanmar and Sudan.

WASHINGTON: The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling on China to immediately stop abusing its citizens' rights and to end its support for Myanmar and Sudan.

The resolution says such action is needed so next week's Beijing Olympics will ``take place in an atmosphere that honors the Olympic traditions of freedom and openness.'' It passed 419 to 1 on Wednesday.

China's critics say the country has failed to follow through on pledges to improve human rights that were included with its bid to host the games. China says it has improved its rights.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged President George W. Bush to deliver a strong message of concern about rights to top Chinese officials during the games.
