US files papers opposing delay of Chrysler sale

US government officials are asking the Supreme Court to allow the sale of most of Chrysler's assets to a group led by Italy's Fiat without further delay.

NEW YORK: US government officials are asking the Supreme Court to allow the sale of most of Chrysler's assets to a group led by Italy's Fiat without further delay.

The Office of the Solicitor General filed papers Monday opposing a request from the three Indiana state pension and construction funds to halt the deal.

An appeals court in New York approved the sale Friday, but gave objectors until Monday afternoon to try to get the Supreme Court to intervene.

Chrysler says the deal is a critical part of its plan to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

But the funds, which hold a small part of Chrysler's secured debt, claim the deal unfairly favors the interests of Chrysler's unsecured stakeholders ahead of those of secured debtholders like themselves.
