US, China relationship stronger: Obama

Obama said that as two of the world's leading economies both US and China have a special obligation to deal with ensuring strong balance and sustained growth.

SEOUL: President Barack Obama says the relationship between the US and China has grown stronger in recent years.

Speaking at the beginning of a meeting with China's President Hu Jintao, Obama says the two countries have "special obligations" to ensure nuclear stability and strong, stable economic growth.

Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged to increase dialogue and cooperation with the United States, following a rocky period of trade and currency disputes between the two nations.

"The Chinese side stands ready to work with the US side to increase dialogue, exchanges and cooperation so that we can move forward the China-US relationship on a positive, cooperative and comprehensive track," Hu said.

The US leader meanwhile said it was clear the US-China relationship had grown stronger in recent years because the sides now discussed global as well as bilateral issues.

"As two of the world's leading economies we have a special obligation to deal with ensuring strong balance and sustained growth," Obama added.

US concerns over China's currency hangs over the G-20 economic meetings in South Korea this week. The US contends that China deliberately undervalues its currency, which gives it an unfair competitive edge.

China has taken issue with US policies, as well. China downgraded US debt, claiming the United States was depreciating the dollar.
