Unilever Pak's sales may rise on Dove soaps

Unilever Pakistan, nation's biggest maker of food and detergents, said sales will probably rise almost 22 per cent this year as it adds some products to its range and spends more on promotions.

KARACHI: Unilever Pakistan, nation's biggest maker of food and detergents, said sales will probably rise almost 22 per cent this year as it adds some products to its range and spends more on promotions.

Revenue may reach $365 million this year, Chief Executive Officer Musharaf Hai said at the company's Karachi headquarters. She declined to forecast profit or give details about the advertising budget.

Hai, the first woman to head an international company in Pakistan, is trying to gain from rising consumer demand in a nation where two-thirds of the 160 million people are below 25 years of age.

Unilever Pakistan aims to introduce three new personal care products in the next 12 months, Hai said. Four new foods products, including additions to the Knorr brand of noodles and soups, will also make their debut.

Most of the growth at Unilever Pakistan, the nation's largest consumer goods company by sales, will come from ice- creams because of an expanded distribution system and brands such as Surf Excel as they benefit from the government's move to scrap a 10 percent excise duty on detergents, Hai said.

Unilever offers a packet of its Lifebuoy shampoo brand for as little as a rupee (less than 2 cents), she said. Lifebuoy is one of the company's largest selling brands along with tea.
