It began in 1975 as a protest day when people came down on the streets opposing the government’s decision to hand over a large part of Yorkshire to neighbouring Lancashire and other counties. Yorkshire Riding Society was the first organization to organize it.

The first Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration was celebrated in the city of York in 1985. Since then, other counties take turns celebrating it.

The city or town that hosts Yorkshire Day has the honour of being the official Yorkshire Day city or town for the whole year. On the day a special event is held when the Yorkshire Day flag is handed over from councilor to councillor and each one adds its own coat of arms to the flag.

Yorkshire Day is also celebrated for two historically important events on August 1. The British and German armies defeated the French army in the Battle of Minden on August 1, 1759. Secondly, the Slavery Abolition Act was passed on August 1, 1883. Yorkshire MP William Wilberforce was the man behind this act.
