British athlete Beth Potter has won the World Triathlon Championship Series 2023, held at Pontevedra in Spain. Her team-mate Kate Waugh finished second. Potter was in the chasing pack in the swim and cycle before she pulled clear in the run. With this victory, the 31-year-old athlete secured her place at next year's Olympic Games in Paris. Talking to reporters after being crowned, she said that it had been a dream season and she had no words. She admitted that she was not doing too well on the swim and bike, so had to work harder. She added further that she felt better throughout the race and believed in her training.


Potter was behind Cassandre Beaugrand


Potter was behind series leader Cassandre Beaugrand at the beginning. Her problem compounded and she faced a tough challenge when she emerged from the swim 16 seconds behind the leading group.


But the British athlete forced her way back into contention on the bike before striking out to win the race ahead of Waugh. She forced France's Beaugrand forced to settle for bronze.


Finishes at top


With 4,559 points, Potter finished at the top of the overall standings. She finished much ahead of French duo Beaugrand with 4,411 points and Emma Lombardi with 3,793 points. It is interesting to note that the British athlete was a full-time physics teacher before taking up triathlon six years ago. She did long-distance running out of term time.

Potter at Rio Olympics


Potter represented Great Britain at the Rio Olympics in 2016 in the 10,000m and finished 34th.
She moved to triathlon in 2017 and relocated to Leeds to train alongside Jonny and Alistair Brownlee, who have five Olympic medals between them.

After winning the championship series at Pontevedra in Spain, Potter also said that she was "not surprised" by how quickly she has become a force in women's triathlon because of her "determination to give it everything". She said that the Olympics in Paris was the goal and winning the World Championships was a bonus.
