Every November 5, the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 is commemorated, a foiled terror plot in which a group of Catholic traitors attempted to blow up the House of Lords to depose King James I. Every autumn, an effigy representing the plot's architect, Guy Fawkes, is burned, a curiously pagan act of gloating sanitized by the addition of fireworks, sparklers, and toffee apples.

Following the death of Elizabeth I, James VI of Scotland came to the English throne, ending the Tudor dynasty and merging the kingdoms of the two nations as Britain's first Stuart king.

Although James was generally friendly to Catholics because his mother and wife were both Catholics, the dominant attitude in England was hostile. Catholic expectations for a more tolerant England under the monarch were dashed in February 1604 when he declared his "absolute detestation."


Catesby, pardoned for his role in Wessex's attempted coup d'etat in 1601, visited Spain to urge Philip to attack England but failed.

He returned to London and hired 12 men to kill James.



Fawkes, a York convert who fought for Spain in the Eighty Years' War, was one of them.

Fawkes posed as a caretaker under the alias "John Johnson" to store the powder kegs. Royal guards caught Fawkes with 36 barrels, a fuse, matches, and an iron light on November 4.

He was imprisoned and tortured in the Tower of London. On January 27, 1606, the conspirators were tried and convicted at Westminster Hall.
