Every November 5, the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 is commemorated, a foiled terror plot in which a group of Catholic traitors attempted to blow up the House of Lords to depose King James I. Catesby, pardoned for his role in Wessex's attempted coup d'etat in 1601, visited Spain to urge Philip to attack England but failed.
He returned to London and hired 12 men to kill James.
