While accusing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of "playing politics" with the lives of people, US President Joe Biden has criticised him for sending Venezuelan migrants to the island community of Martha's Vineyard without any warning. In addition, the legality of this move by the Florida Governor is also being scrutinised. Democratic politicians and immigration activists have called it a "political stunt". The uproar emerged after DeSantis sent about 50 migrants, including adults and children, from Texas to Martha's Vineyard by two charter planes on September 14.
President Joe Biden slammed DeSantis during his speech on September 15. The US President also criticised the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott. Biden said that what the governors were doing was wrong, "un-American," and 'reckless'. Abbott had arranged for two buses from Texas to drop off over 100 migrants from Cuba, Colombia, Nicaragua, Guyana, Venezuela, and Panama. Notably, both Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott belong to the Republican Party. DeSantis is also expected to run for the presidential nomination of the Republican Party in 2024.

Meanwhile, Polaris, the leader of the anti-trafficking charity, issued a strong statement in this regard and questioned whether the actions of DeSantis and Abbott amounted to human trafficking. Polaris made the strong remarks on September 16, citing claims of migrant workers. Several migrants said they were unaware of where they were being sent. Catherine Chen, the Polaris chief, stated that if the migrants were defrauded for material gain, it should be investigated as human trafficking.
Several Democrats have condemned DeSantis and Abbott. Charlie Crist, who is the Democratic nominee for Florida governor, accused DeSantis of doing human trafficking with the money of Florida's taxpayers. The Democratic congresswoman from Texas, Veronica Escobar, called DeSantis "a soulless" person. Rachael Rollins, the US attorney for Massachusetts, has even demanded a federal investigation into the matter, which has been termed as potential human trafficking.
