Who Was Eddie Stobart? Visionary Founder of the UK’s Most Iconic Haulage Brand Dies at 95

Eddie Stobart, the name associated with Britain's most recognizable haulage brand, has died at 95. He leaves behind a legacy that transformed the UK's transport industry.

Eddie Stobart, the visionary who created the UK's most iconic lorry brand, has died at the age of 95. He founded his legendary company in 1946 to distribute fertiliser, but over the years, it became synonymous with British roads, remembered fondly for its distinctive lorry designs and the cherished tradition of naming each vehicle after women.

Eddie Stobart was born in 1929 in Cumbria. He began his business with a single lorry painted in post office red and Brunswick green. Though Eddie laid the groundwork, it was his son Edward who transformed the company into an international logistics giant in the 1970s. Edward led Eddie Stobart Limited to expand into over 1,000 vehicles, making it a multimillion-pound operation.

Edward carried on his father’s tradition of naming lorries after women, starting with names like Twiggy, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette. This unique practice, combined with the instruction for drivers to honk when waved at, turned the lorries into a cultural icon. Fans of the brand engaged in “Stobart spotting,” making the trucks a beloved sight on UK motorways.

A fan club boasting 25,000 members and songs like The Wurzels’ “I Wanna Be an Eddie Stobart Driver” further cemented the company’s legendary status. Despite its rebranding to Stobart under Culina Group ownership, the lorry-naming tradition has since ceased.

A devout Christian, Eddie met his wife Nora at a Bible rally in Carlisle, marrying her on Boxing Day in 1951. They retired to a quiet life near Carlisle, remaining active in their church community. The couple raised four children: Anne, John, Edward, and William. Eddie Stobart is survived by his daughter Anne and son William.
