Who was Andrew Watson? Google pays tribute to first Black international footballer with Doodle

The iconic Google Doodle has celebrated Andrew Watson, considered the first Black international football player. Andrew Watson was also the first Black football player to captain Scotland's team. Besides, he became the first Black football administrator in history. October 18 is historic because it was when Andrew Watson played for the Scottish football team Queen's Park for the first time in 1884 at the new Hampden Park stadium.

Director of the Scottish Football Museum, Ged O'Brien, said that the findings, which date back to the 1870s and 1880s, suggest that Andrew Watson was the first Black British footballer who played for Queens Park and Scotland.





Andrew Watson was born on May 24, 1856, in present-day Guyana, then known as British Guiana. The footballer's father, Miller Watson, was a wealthy Scottish sugar planter.

Andrew Watson's mother was Hannah Rose, and he also had an elder sister named Annetta.
Andrew Watson moved to the United Kingdom with his father and sister at the age of five. He studied at Heath Grammar School (West Yorkshire) and later at King's College School in London. King's College School's Records prove that Watson was an excellent football player.

Andrew Watson's professional football career began in 1874. In 1880, he was signed by Queen's Park. Andrew Watson made many sporting records till he officially retired from every aspect of the game in 1910. Andrew Watson died in 1921 at 64. The Google Doodle has featured Watson in his blue and white striped uniform with brown boots.
