Government leaders from around the world have been meeting almost annually to create a global response to the climate disaster for almost three decades at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27). Every nation is obligated by the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to "prevent disastrous climate change and discover solutions to globally reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a fair manner.
Conference of the Parties under the UNFCCC is known as Cop, and the yearly meetings have fluctuated between acrimonious and somnolent, punctuated by times of high drama and the odd triumph (the Paris Agreement in 2015) and calamity (Copenhagen in 2009). The 27th edition is expected to be a challenging follow-up to the historic Cop26 summit in Glasgow last year.

The meeting, which starts on November 6 in Sharm-el-Sheikh, will be hosted by the Egyptian government. Following that, on November 7 and 8, world leaders will convene in a series of closed-door sessions to instruct their officials on how to reach necessary agreement. They will then leave, leaving their representatives to handle the difficult negotiations.
On Friday, November 18, the negotiations are supposed to end at 6 p.m. However, based on previous Cop meetings, it is likely that they will continue into Saturday and even on Sunday.

The most significant change at Cop26 was that nations decided to concentrate on the more challenging 1.5C aspirational objective of the Paris Agreement, realising that the 2C target would permit severe destruction to occur.
