Birmingham City have approached Wayne Rooney after he quit D.C. United, according to reports. Know who may join the coaching team.

After quitting Major League Soccer (MLS) club D.C. United, ex-Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney is most likely to be the manager of Birmingham City. He took the MLS job in July 2022. Wayne Rooney spent 18 months at the club as a player before joining Derby as player-coach in January 2020. But after DC United missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, the club and the ex-England icon decided to part ways.


Wayne Rooney: Right time


Confirming it, Rooney told BBC that it is the right time to move on. He also said that he had done everything he could to get the club into the play-off stage. DC United CEO echoed his sentiment and said he and Wayne Rooney had agreed that it was best for them to part ways. He also said that Rooney would remain an important part of the DC United family and a valued and cherished friend.



MLS Best XI


Earlier, Wayne Rooney has also played for United. He appeared in 48 matches, scored 23 goals and made 15 assists. Rooney was voted MLS Best XI in 2018, and an All-Star in 2019, he was also an MLS MVP finalist in 2018.

Birmingham City approach Wayne Rooney


If media reports are to be believed, Birmingham City made an initial approach to talk to Wayne Rooney after sacking John Eustace as head coach. Birmingham sacked Eustace on Monday after the club was ranked sixth in the Championship.


Cole, O'Shea may join Wayne Rooney


Ex-Chelsea and England left-back Ashley Cole and ex-Man Utd team-mate John O'Shea are expected to join the coaching team. Ashley Cole moved into coaching with Derby after he retired in 2019. He was named first-team coach at Everton under Frank Lampard in 2022. He left them in January, returned to England's U21 and helped the Young Lions go all the way to Euros glory.

On the other hand, John O'Shea has worked as a first-team coach at Reading and Stoke since retiring in 2019. The ex-Manchester United player worked as a first-team coach at Reading and Stoke since retiring in 2019.
