Ever experienced weak bones, mental health-related issues and weak limbs? One of the main factors could be due to Vitamin D deficiency. Now, a leading fitness Doctor from the UK has explained the benefits of this important Vitamin in preventing dementia and Colon Cancer. This has been reported by ‘Mirror’ in the UK.

Risk of dementia

While expressing his general stand against taking various supplements in an article in the Daily Mail, Dr Michael Mosley asserted that with aging, the ability of the body to absorb Vitamin D reduces which further increases the risk of dementia and colon cancer. Hence, taking these supplements is all the more important.

What are the details?

The doctor further added that he was popping in Vitamin D supplements only during winter but has now decided to have it every day. UK’s NHS also endorses a daily dose of Vitamin D. He added that research has recently pointed out that as one age, the ability of the skin to absorb Vitamin D reduces. This increases the chances of older people being affected by Vitamin D deficiency and thereby having an increased chance of contracting Dementia and Colon cancer. This is often due to older people not going out and preferring to stay indoors.

As far as the dosage is concerned, different health agencies differ on the quantity.

Dr. Mosley said that nearly every cell in the human body can receive and synthesize Vitamin D and its usefulness is far beyond just bones. To maintain one’s mental health and prevent colon cancer, one would need to take a bit more than the recommended dosage.

A study published in the journal Science stated how taking large dosages of Vitamin D will help in boosting the gut bacteria which overall ensures the prevention of bowel cancers.
