US Winter Storm kills 28 people in New York, leaves residents trapped in cars

Twenty-eight people have lost their lives in New York state, USA, due to the extreme cold and winter storm across the country. The temperature in the country has plummeted to -45 degree celsius. Joe Biden, the president of the US, has issued an emergency declaration allowing federal support for New York State. President Biden offered condolences to the people who lost their lives in this cold. He said in a Tweet that his heart is with those who lost their loved ones this holiday weekend.

Kathy Hochul, New York state governor, has requested people to stay inside their houses and remain off the roads. She said that anyone who says it is over is wrong; it is too early to say that. Hochul said it looks like going to a war zone, and the conditions of the vehicles alongside the roads are terrifying. She added that emergency vehicles are struggling to reach the worst-hit areas due to the extreme snow on the roads.

Transportation and flights are poorly hit by the storm. According to Flightaware.com, more than 25000 flights have recently been cancelled across the US due to extreme weather. About 2600 flights were cancelled on Monday itself.

The extreme weather has caused the temperature to go below 0 degrees celsius in 48 US states in recent days. Extreme cold is also seen in Mexico and badly affects a large part of Canada.
