The UK's national grid has activated its backup power plan out of concern that energy sources would run out and cause blackouts.
The network is experiencing a spike in demand as the country is blanketed in snow and temperatures plummet below zero. Following this, National Grid has informed two of its reserve coal-fired power plants to start up, ready to supply electricity when the grid needs it.
The official spokesperson for National Grid stated that the emergency plan "should give the public confidence in Monday's energy supply," since millions are anticipated to work from home and crank up the heat due to traffic difficulties.
He stated that the plan's activation did not imply that the coal-fired units would be used on Monday but rather that they would be accessible to the grid if needed.
"The ESO as a prudent system operator has these tools for an additional contingency to operate the network as normal and the public should continue to use energy as normal," he added.
It takes place as this week's cold weather continues, with temperatures falling as low as -10C and areas of the UK waking up to several inches of snow this morning.

The thing with unconscious bias – it is actually no one’s fault. But once it has been pointed out, or identified within yourself, you then need to make it right, he said.

Large portions of the UK were affected by ice, fog, and snow on Monday morning, causing travel nightmares for commuters. The wintry conditions prompted the Metropolitan Office to issue yellow extreme weather alerts.
On Sunday, there was new snow in a number of places, including Andrewsfield, Essex (9 cm), Charlwood, Surrey (5 cm), and Herstmonceux, East Sussex (4 cm). However, one of the worst-impacted regions for roads is eastern and southeast England.
The M25, the busiest highway in the UK, was shut down in both directions between Junction 23 for South Mimms and Junction 25 for Waltham Cross, both in Hertfordshire, leaving commuters trapped for many hours. According to National Highways, there are several more local routes experiencing significant delays, including the M11, M2, A21, A27, and A249.
