UK weather alerts: Snow and ice warnings extended to more parts of the country over coming days

The warning across the Southeast, Midlands, and Wales will come into effect from 9 pm tonight and last until 10 am Tuesday, said the Met Office.

For the Midlands, most of Wales, and the southeast, including London, a yellow weather warning for snow and ice is expected to go into effect overnight.

The Met Office has also issued warnings for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the northeastern part of England. In some isolated areas of Scotland, up to 30 cm of snow is forecast to fall.

With temperatures falling as low as -1C (30F) in Manchester and 2C (35F) in London on Monday night, patchy snowfall of 1-2 cm might build over most of Wales and portions of central, southern, and eastern England.

The alert is in effect from Monday at 9 pm to Tuesday at 10 am.

Northern Scotland could expect regular snow showers starting on Monday afternoon, according to the Met Office, with overnight lows possibly falling to -10C (14F).

The warnings follow Arctic air descending over Scotland and onto northern England.

Scotland might see up to 10 centimetres of snow on higher ground and 5 cm on lower ground as a result of the wintry weather.

Northeast England, northwest England, and Yorkshire are under a level three cold weather notice from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), while the remainder of England is on a level two alert.

According to the NHS, a level three notice indicates that there is a 90% possibility of extremely cold weather, slippery conditions, or heavy snow, all of which might pose a health risk to vulnerable people.

Up until Thursday night at midnight, all communities are on alert.

According to the Met Office, "certain roads and railways are likely to be disrupted with lengthier trip times by road, bus, and train services" as a result of this might disrupt travel.

Although it is extremely rare to spot the Aurora from London, it could be possible during a strong geomagnetic storm. For the best chance of seeing them, it is suggested to find a location with minimal light pollution and a clear view of the northern horizon.

According to the Royal Museums Greenwich's website, the lights occur due to solar storms on the surface of the sun emitting clouds of electrically charged particles that can travel millions of miles and collide with the Earth.

After initially announcing the warnings for Monday and Tuesday, it moved them forward to Sunday evening.

The warning was advanced, according to meteorologist Honor Criswick, who stated on Sunday: "We are anticipating a couple of additional outbreaks of snow showers through this evening and seeing a little more precipitation early on.

"During the next several days, Scotland and northern areas of England may anticipate bitterly low temperatures and snow showers.

It will feel fairly cold and the breeze is kicking up a little bit, so it will be quite chilly. According to the forecast, northern Scotland could see lows of -10C on Monday night in protected glens and higher territory.

"It's possible that this year's lowest temperatures will be experienced here. The lowest temperature we have recorded was -10.4C in January, so anything may drop much lower.”

Power outages, ice roads, delays in air, train, and road traffic, and the isolation of certain remote populations are all potential effects of the warnings.

"If you can, try to heat your house to at least 18C if you can if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over 65."
