With the New Year ushering in, the government of the United Kingdom is at loggerheads with industrial workers who have been agitating over salary, jobs, and work systems. Reportedly, 40,000 workers of the Rail, Maritime, and Transport union at Network Rail have initiated two 48-hour-long strikes on January 3. They are joined by 14 train operators as well.

The strike organised by railway personnel is likely to disrupt the public transport system. The government released an advance warning citing the ‘travelling disturbance’ for the passengers and those who are returning after the festive celebrations. The protest will continue until Friday.

Tens of thousands of workers have come together to join the ‘wave of strikes’ being organised across the country. In the first week of January 2023, rail workers, bus drivers, teachers, nurses, ambulance staff, and public servants have announced to go on strike in the coming days.
