The UK prime minister, Liz Truss, announced her resignation from Downing Street on Thursday. She said that she will be stepping down from a Conservative Party leadership election that will take place in the next week. Liz Truss' speech addressed concerns about the economy and businesses.
Reiterating that she came to Downing Street in times of economic stability, she said that it was a time when paying bills for families was very difficult. She also reflected on the impact of Russia’s war with Ukraine and noted how it shook the whole continent while crippling the economy entirely.
Liz Truss said that she considered changing the conditions and implementing measures to improve the UK's financial functioning. She highlighted her notable achievements, such as national insurance cuts, low taxation, and a pro-growth agenda. She also said that she had informed King Charles III about her resignation and met the chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady. Her discussion with the chairman concluded that there would be a sure-shot election in the next week. According to Liz Truss, an election will ensure that the party sticks to fiscal plans and focuses more on maintaining national security and economic stability.
