Unions have announced that over 1,000 workers at the Passport Office will be embarking on a five-week strike from April 3 to May 5 this year due to a disagreement over jobs, pay, and conditions. Employees from the Public and Commercial Services union throughout England, Scotland, and Wales will participate in the strike.

The union has expressed concerns about delays in passport applications and delivery ahead of the summer season. The Home Office has expressed disappointment in the PCS's decision, stating that it had been engaged in productive discussions to resolve the conflict. Despite the strike, the Home Office is working to ensure that essential services are maintained with extensive contingency plans in place.

The Passport Office employs over 4,000 individuals throughout the UK. As per the union's estimate, approximately one in four workers will be participating in the upcoming strike. The strike action is targeted to cause significant disruption and primarily affects employees working in the passport examination departments, which comprises over 1,300 individuals.

Although it is extremely rare to spot the Aurora from London, it could be possible during a strong geomagnetic storm. For the best chance of seeing them, it is suggested to find a location with minimal light pollution and a clear view of the northern horizon.

According to the Royal Museums Greenwich's website, the lights occur due to solar storms on the surface of the sun emitting clouds of electrically charged particles that can travel millions of miles and collide with the Earth.

The strike will affect Passport Office offices in various locations across England, Scotland, and Wales, including Durham, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Newport, Peterborough, and Southport. Workers in Belfast are also being balloted and could potentially join the strike. During peak periods, the Passport Office can receive up to 250,000 applications per week, and as such, travel expert Simon Calder estimates that over one million applications may be sent during the strike period.

However, the Home Office has stated that its guidance remains the same, allowing up to ten weeks to obtain a passport, with preparations being made to meet demand. It is worth noting that a UK adult passport is valid for ten years, and some countries require it to be valid for the duration of the planned stay, while others require a certain period of validity left until the expiry date, which can be found on the government's foreign travel advice website.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka has explained that the dispute is due to a proposed 2 per cent pay rise that the government is not willing to increase any further. He has stated that the strike action is a result of the government's failure to engage in meaningful talks, despite previous strikes and targeted action over the last six months.

Serwotka has criticized the government's approach, claiming that they are treating their workforce unfairly. He has further accused the government of disregarding their members' concerns over pay, but noted that the workers will not back down.
