UK migration at peak since Second World War, here's what reports say

The United Kingdom has had the most significant net migration since the conclusion of World War II. An estimated 504,000 more migrants entered the UK than departed last year, a sum larger than Liverpool's population.

It surpasses the previous post-war high of 329,000 established in 2015. According to the Office for National Statistics figures, over a million individuals entered the nation last year. According to the research, an estimated 35,000 people crossed the English Channel in small boats in the fiscal year ending in June 2022.

However, figures supplied by the Ministry of Defense earlier this month placed the amount at more than 40,000. The total number of individuals arriving in the UK was anticipated to reach 1.1 million.


According to the ONS, most of the rise was caused by students coming to study. Work visas climbed by 72% in the year to June 2022, compared to the last similar pre-pandemic statistics in 2019. More than 170,000 visas were awarded to Ukrainian nationals escaping the conflict in Ukraine, adding to the numbers. Around 28,000 British residents with "abroad" status from Hong Kong entered the country as part of a plan announced in January 2021 to help them avoid potential persecution.
