UK-Ireland Box office prediction: Will Jason Statham’s Meg 2: The Trench beat Barbenheimer?

The frenzy that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie and Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer have caused at the box office worldwide is disruptive. Hashtag ‘Barbenheimer’, as the two movies that released on July 21 are called together, continues to rule the ticket windows.

So, who will even attempt to beat Barbenheimer? Let’s take a look.

Meg 2: The Trench, a sequel to the 2018 movie The Meg, releases on August 4, 2023, and will hope to challenge some of the ticket sales of Barbie and Oppenheimer from Friday.


Five years ago, The Meg had opened with £3.7 million in early August 2018, ending with total collections of £15.9 million.

Actor Jason Statham reprises his role in the sequel to the shark movie. Other cast members include Cliff Curtis, Sienna Guillory, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Skyler Samuels.

Meg 2 is predicted to have an opening weekend range from $22 million to$27 million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Also challenging Barbenheimer since July 31 is Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The animation film is especially appealing to children and families, who are not exactly the target audience for either Barbie or Oppenheimer.

Directed by Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears, the TNMT series reboot stars an impressive voice cast, with names like Jackie Chan, John Cena, Post Malone, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and Maya Rudolph, among others.

Joyride starring Ashley Park

The Lionsgate comedy film, Joy Ride, starring Emily in Paris star Ashley Park and directed by Crazy Rich Asians writer Adele Lim, was also up for a theatrical release on July 7. The fun film shows four Asian-American friends who visit their home country China while looking for one of their birth mothers.

Although a lovable film, Joyride does not seem to be a challenge for Barbie and Oppenheimer.
