To commemorate the coronation of King Charles III the following year, the government declared an additional bank holiday.
According to a Downing Street statement, the day will be a chance for families and communities to celebrate.

It will take place on Monday, May 8, two days following the coronation of Charles and Queen Consort Camilla on Saturday, May 6.
Eight months after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the monarch's assession, the coronation will take place in Westminster Abbey.

According to a statement from Buckingham Palace, the event will be based on pageantry and long-standing traditions but it will also "reflect the monarch's role today and look towards the future."

An estimated 27 million Britons watched the coronation in Westminster Abbey at the Queen's request, which led to the event's first television broadcast.

The entire United Kingdom will get an additional bank holiday the following year in honour of the historic milestone.
