The UK expects travellers from China to provide a negative pre-departure COVID test report at the airport. According to sources, the action is preventive, transitory, and motivated by mistrust in China's vaccination programme and COVID-19-related data. This action will bring the UK on par with a number of other nations, including the US, which recently issued a similar decree. There has been an increase in COVID-19 infections after it relaxed several of its infamously strict coronavirus regulations, such as the requirement for routine PCR testing. Shanghai, the largest metropolis in China, had 5.43 million positive cases among its 25 million citizens last week.

However, as asymptomatic instances are no longer counted, the actual incidence may be far higher, experts said. According to papers that were released, authorities predicted that 250 million people probably caught the virus in the first 20 days of December.

Among the nations that have lately implemented new regulations on arrivals from China are Spain, Italy, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and India. The French transport minister announced on Friday that his nation would implement adjustments on January 1. Before departing from China, negative tests are required; on the flight, masks are required; and tests are conducted upon arrival in France.

The "main concern" from China, according to former UK health minister Will Quince, is the possibility of novel varieties, but some experts think travel restrictions would not be effective in such a situation.

China has refuted criticism of its COVID data and stated that it anticipates that future mutations may be more transmissible but less harmful. On January 8, the nation will no longer require visitors to quarantine. Given the large number of infections that are now present in the nation, it is believed to be ineffective.

Following a wave of infections brought on by the removal of restrictions, a number of nations, including the US, India, Italy, South Korea, and Taiwan, have responded by forcing visitors from China to undergo viral testing.

The attempt to eradicate a virus by altering how we handle travel has already been demonstrated to be ineffective, Sir Andrew stated on Friday morning. That was demonstrated by the travel restrictions placed on citizens of several nations during the pandemic.
