UK election results: Labour Party wins by-election in Stretford and Urmston, pressure mounts on Conservatives

The Labour Party has easily won the Stretford and Urmston seat in the by-election. Andrew western has emerged victorious with nearly 10,000 more votes than the Tory candidate Emily Carter-Kandola. Western has got an overwhelming 70 percent vote share.

Andrew Western is succeeding Kate Green, who resigned in November as she is nominated for deputy mayor of Greater Manchester. Western managed to swing 11 percent of the Tory vote share in 2018. The Labour Party has held the Greater Manchester seat since its creation in 1997. Victor of Western has been highly expected due to the predominance of the Labour Party in this seat. The Tory candidate managed to secure only 16 percent of the vote share. Also, due to the extreme cold on election day, only a quarter of the voters turned up to vote.

Some political analysts are saying that the Tory party had conceded their defeat long before the election as there were no efforts by the Party in the weeks leading to the election. Political Analyst Kevin Fitzpatrick says that this seat is the stronghold of the Labour Party, and they were becoming increasingly bullish in the weeks leading to the election while Tories were putting in their minimum efforts.



It is the second victory for the Labour Party in two weeks. Last week, Samantha Dixon won in the Chester by-election. The two consecutive victories have strengthened the position of the Labour Party and put enormous pressure on the Conservatives.

Andrew Western targets the Conservatives after the victor and for the failure in their governance. He said, "There has been a strong message sent with the result this evening. And the people of Stretford and Urmston do not just speak for this constituency but for millions more people up and down the land, who know that this government has been letting us down for the past 12 years".

With these recent victories, the Labour Party is emerging powerful after a long time since David Cameron left Downing Street in 2010. The pressure is already mounting on the Conservative Party due to the Party's internal crises and the country's financial crises.
