The High Court in London has regarded the government’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda as lawful. According to media reports, Lord Justice Lewis ruled that the controversial policy brought by the Boris Johnson regime was in line with the refugee convention.
On the other hand, the High Court pointed out that the first group sent back to Rwanda did get a fair chance to have their circumstances adequately considered by the former Home Secretary Priti Patel. The High Court directed that the current Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, must evaluate the particular circumstances of the refugees before finalizing their deportation.
As a result of the High Court ruling, the cases of Rwandan refugees would be referred to the office of Braverman for reconsideration. Welcoming the High Court ruling, the Home Secretary said that the ground-breaking agreement with the Rwandan government would help people relocate and rebuild their lives. She also said the ruling would disrupt the business of illegal crossing of people in small boats that puts lives at risk. Braverman would address the House of Commons shortly on the High Court judgment.

Former Home Secretary Priti Patel also welcomed the ruling. While she reiterated that a single policy could not stop the illegal channel crossing, the new agreement would save lives and dent the business of criminal gangs committing asylum abuse. After the ouster of Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and then Rishi Sunak insisted that they would push the agreement after taking charge of Number 10.
On the other hand, refugee rights activists have criticized the ruling and said they’d be challenging it in the Supreme Court. They said they wanted to ensure people were treated with respect and dignity. The charities termed the agreement between the UK and Rwanda, which the High Court has upheld, as inhumane.
