Conservative MP Miriam Cates is under investigation by the parliamentary commissioner for standards over claim that she caused significant damage to the reputation of the Commons and its members. Cates is MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire

It was confirmed by the watchdog on their website. Allegation details is yet to be revealed.

The inquiry falls under paragraph 17 of the updated 2019 code of conduct for MPs, which says: “Members shall never undertake any action which would cause significant damage to the reputation and integrity of the House of Commons as a whole, or of its members generally.”

A co-chair of the new conservatives, Cates was recently in the headlines after she critised UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Rwanda bill, claiming it did not go far enough to disapply foreign human rights laws.

She is also part of right-leaning pressure groups within the Tories.

Cates is also on the culture war-favouring side of the Tory right, also working with another of the five lobbies, the Common Sense Group. She co-founded the New Social Covenant Unit with Kruger, which seeks to promote family-centred policies.

Cates is also a very strong advocate of policies to encourgae women in UK to have more children and opposes allowing transgenders to self-identify.

At a conference in May, Cates said the UK’s low birthrate was the most pressing policy issue of the generation, blaming it in part on “a cultural Marxism that is systematically destroying our children’s souls”.

Cates is among eight MPs currently being investigated by standards commissioner Daniel Greenberg.
