Over a thousand banking customers in the UK have been unable to access their accounts due to technical issues, with several banking apps currently down.

Reports of the Lloyds Bank app crash were registered more than 4,000 times on Downdetector on Friday morning. Other affected banks included Halifax, TSB, and Bank of Scotland, both of which are part of Lloyds Banking Group.

A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group confirmed the issue, stating that the bank was aware that some customers were experiencing difficulties with internet banking and mobile apps. The spokesperson also apologised for the disruption and said that they were working to resolve the issue.

Outage coincides with payday

The disruption has not only caused inconvenience to customers but has also occurred at a particularly inconvenient time — many people in the UK receive their salaries on this day. Complaints flooded social media, with users sharing images of error messages received while attempting to access the apps.

One frustrated user stated that their new bank card had no customer service phone number, and the nearest branch was too far away.

This is not the first time UK banks have faced such issues. In January, Barclays’ mobile banking services were down for several days, disrupting transactions for thousands of customers.

Treasury Committee seeks explanations

The UK Treasury Committee has written to the chief executives of nine major banks, including Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Nationwide, Barclays, and HSBC, seeking explanations for the IT failures, their impact on customers and the steps being taken to prevent future disruptions.

Banks issue statements

Some banks have acknowledged technical difficulties. TSB stated that it was aware of industry-wide issues affecting customers and was working to restore access. Nationwide reported delays in processing some transactions but assured customers that all payments were being completed.
