A Mississippi-based furniture manufacturer laid off over 2,700 workers just before midnight on November 21, The Guardian reported. The company informed the employees of their dismissal via text and email and asked them not to report to work the following day.

United Furniture Industries, well-known for producing low-cost couches and recliners for Simmons Upholstery, laid off thousands of workers just two days before Thanksgiving.

According to the New York Post, the company's message to employees stated, at the instruction of the board of directors... We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen business circumstances, the company was pushed to make the tough decision to discontinue the employment of all the employees in the company, effective on November 21.


The corporation also directed its drivers to return the equipment, goods and delivery paperwork quickly, regardless of whether they had finished their delivery.
