Trooping the Colour: Where to watch, fly past time and other details of King Charles III’s birthday parade

Trooping the Colour will be held on Saturday, 17 June this year to mark King Charles’ birthday parade. The King’s actual birthday is in November. Read on to know the details.

King Charles III was born on November 14, but his birthday as the Sovereign will also be celebrated with public festivities in June every year. The birthday parade of King Charles is known as Trooping the Colour.


When is Trooping the Colour in 2023?


This is the first year of King Charles III’s reign, and the birthday celebrations of Trooping the Colour will be held on Saturday, June 17, in London.

Trooping the Colour is a 260-year-old tradition with a display of pageantry to commemorate the new Sovereign. It is reported that more than 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses as well as 400 musicians will be a part of the military display.

Where will the Birthday Parade take place?


The birthday parade of King Charles III will begin at Buckingham Palace and move to The Mall, and then will be the Horse Guard’s Parade, which will have members of the British royal family on horseback and in carriages.


What are the Red Arrows and when is the fly past?


The Red Arrows is the The Royal Air Force (RAF) Aerobatic Team, known for speed, agility and precision. The Red Arrows have been flying displays since 1965 in the UK. Additionally, the Red Arrows help in recruiting to the Armed Forces. They also act as ambassadors for the UK at home and overseas.

The Red Arrows flypast will take place following the Trooping of the Colour, around 1 pm (approximately between 12:40 pm and 1:15 pm) local time. The Red Arrows will fly Hawk fast-jets. They will be joined by other aircraft, including the Spitfires and the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial flight.

It’s expected that after flying through Essex, the flypast will be seen over London before dispersing over Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Highlights of the King’s birthday parade and celebration on June 17 will be shown on BBC One from 6.15 pm local time.
