Tory MPs are plotting to replace UK PM Liz Truss with Penny Mordaunt or Rishi Sunak, claims former MP

A senior Tory has claimed that because of party leader and UK Prime Minister Liz Truss' disastrous first month in office, conservative MPs are already making plots to replace her, according to media reports. According to the ConservativeHome website's editor Paul Goodman, the MPs being tapped as possible alternatives for the prime ministerial role include Penny Mordaunt and Rishi Sunak.

It's happening after PM Liz Truss came out with her first budget in the office, after which the rise in interest rates on government and mortgage debt and tanking of the pound happened.





Moreover, when unfunded tax cuts were announced primarily for higher earners, it caused chaos in the financial market and reduced Tory poll ratings to a record low.

A poll result showed Labour capturing swathes of "blue wall" seats in the south of England.

Paul Goodman, a former Tory MP himself, further said that the Conservative backbenchers are searching for a "possible replacement for Kwasi Kwarteng". Even they're casting around for a possible substitute for Lizz Truss, he added.

He further added that though all sorts of names such as Boris Johnson, Sajid Javid, Kit Malthouse, and Rishi Sunak are being thrown out, as Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt got two-thirds of the votes of the MPs between them so they can come to "some kind of arrangement" and take over.

Sunak and Ms Mordaunt ran in the Tory leadership contest against Ms Truss, which was won by the prime minister a month ago.
