This suspension is expected to trigger a by-election in his Wellingborough constituency, which was previously a secure seat for the Conservative Party, but recent polls suggest it may change hands in favor of the Labour Party.
The parliamentary ethics committee established that Mr. Bone had allegedly engaged in indecent exposure and physically assaulted a staff member. However, Mr. Bone vehemently denies these allegations.
MPs voted in favor of suspending Mr. Bone from parliament for six weeks, without requiring a division. The suspension had been recommended by Parliament's Independent Expert Panel (IEP).
The inquiry stemmed from a complaint filed with the organization by a former staff member, concerning alleged conduct that occurred over a decade ago. Mr. Bone contested the findings of the investigation, claiming it was flawed. Nevertheless, his appeal was rejected.
Philip Hollobone, Tory MP for Kettering, which neighbors Mr. Bone's constituency, expressed that the expulsion was "a very sad day" in parliament. He noted that Peter had been an outstanding MP for 18 years, helping tens of thousands of local residents with their difficulties. Mr. Hollobone believed that it was unfortunate for all concerned that it should come to an end like this.
The Conservative Party has already withdrawn the whip from the MP, rendering him ineligible to run for re-election as a Tory candidate, and he currently serves as an independent.
Peter Bone, aged 70, has been an active participant in Conservative politics since the 1970s, culminating in his election to the House of Commons in 2005.
Noteworthy for his staunch support of Brexit, he joined forces with Nigel Farage during the 2016 referendum campaign. In the 2019 election, Bone transformed Wellingborough from a highly competitive district into a secure Conservative stronghold, achieving an impressive 18,540-vote majority.
Recognized as a prominent figure on the right-wing of the Conservative Party, he briefly assumed the role of deputy Commons leader under Boris Johnson. He was once known for his playful references to his wife Jenny as "Mrs. Bone" in Parliament, but the couple separated in 2016, and he is reportedly in a new relationship.
