With the overwhelming increase in the Strep A bug, parents have constantly feared whether their child is affected. Strep A is a bacteria found on the skin or throat known to lead to mild infections or, in rare cases, a deadly illness. Since September, 14 children under the age of 15 have died, per UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) data. Recently, two more deaths have been recorded in Wales and Belfast, totalling 16.

The bacteria are commonly carried by a fifth of people and typically have no or mild symptoms. It can be treated with antibiotics. One of the disadvantages, though, is that it can be mistaken for other viruses.

Due to the growing panic, the RCGP recently published guidelines for parents when they need help and when they do not. These guidelines aimed to reduce parents' worries and pressure on healthcare providers. There have been 652 reports of the disease, making it the highest in the last five years.
