TikTok, a video-sharing website owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has informed users that some of its employees in China have access to data from accounts in the United Kingdom and the European Union.

According to the social media behemoth, the "privacy policy" is "based on a demonstrated necessity to execute the work." Authorities throughout the world, including the United Kingdom and the United States, have expressed concern that data may be given to the Chinese government. Earlier this week, a US official demanded that the app be blocked in the country.

According to TikTok, the policy applies to the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Elaine Fox, the platform's head of privacy for Europe, said in a statement on Wednesday that a worldwide team assisted in maintaining a consistent, engaging and safe user experience.
