Three dead, several injured as heavy rainfall, landslides wreak havoc in southern Italy

Heavy rainfall and landslides have wreaked havoc in the islands of Ischia, Naples and several other places in southern Italy. Different teams have been continuously working to find and save as many people as possible.

• Up to 155mm of rain fell on the island in six hours. This heavy rainfall also led to landslides on November 26.

• According to Italy's interior minister Matteo Piantedosi, more than 100 firefighters, along with several divers and earthmoving units, are on the job to look for survivors.


• So far, three people have been found dead. Several are injured and many are still missing.

• Workers continuously try to remove excess mud and debris, but the damage looks severe.



• Many destroyed vehicles can be spotted on the street. Either piled up on each other or buried under the debris.

The Island of Ischia looks to have witnessed the most damage. But one of the critical issues arising in most houses on the island were illegally-built thud.

The minister of civil protection said Italy needs a national plan for climate control. He said that in the future, Italy needs buildings that can withstand natural disasters like heavy rainfall and earthquakes. He reasoned that securing their public territory is one of the significant plans they must work on in the next five years.
