Darryl Hunt is no more. He was the bass player of 'The Pogues', who joined the band in 1986 and remained a mainstay of it until its final album, Pogue Mahone, in 1996.

Darryl Hunt, the bass player of 'The Pogues', has died at the age of 72. The group announced on Twitter that Hunt had died on Monday afternoon in London.

The band added that it was “saddened beyond words.” The cause of Hunt’s death remains unknown.

The band posted a monochrome picture of Hunt holding a guitar case and captioned it by quoting lyrics from the song “Love You ’Till The End,” written by the late bassist.


Band frontman Shane MacGowan praised Hunt on Twitter, stating how sorry he was at his fellow band member’s death and describing him as a great friend and a great bass player.

He said that the whole band would miss him.

Hunt was born on May 4, 1950 in Hampshire. Before joining 'The Pogues' as a bassist in 1986, he played for the pub rock band Plummet Airlines and the Favourites.

After joining 'The Pogues', Hunt was responsible for many of its hits, including the 1988 album 'If I Should Fall from Grace with God. The album included the Christmas hit 'Fairytale of New York.

Hunt featured in all of the band’s subsequent work until its last album in 1996 — Pogue Mahone.

Hunt consistently had writing credits for many of the band’s songs.
