Teenage refugee girl from Ukraine dies after being spotted unconscious on South Devon beach

The death of the Ukrainian girl has remained 'unexplained' as an investigation has begun.

A 14-year-old Ukrainian girl died after being found unconscious on a Devon beach in southwest England. The Devon and Cornwall Police informed that the girl was found at Dawlish Beach, following a search involving the police helicopter and coastguard. Afterward, the Ukrainian girl was airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where she later died. Police have confirmed that girl and her mother were refugees, as per a Sky News report.

The Police office added, formal identification has taken place and the nearest known one has been informed.

At this point in time, the cause of her death is undecipherable and the local Police urged anyone with any kind of lead like CCTV or doorbell footage that can assist in the investigation asked to contact 101@dc.police.uk quoting case reference 50230052081.


A Police officer from South Devon and Cornwall, Detective Inspector Becky Davies, said the deceased girl was a Ukrainian national who had been living in the Dawlish area; contact has been made with the Ukrainian Embassy and the Home Office is also aware of this incident.

Ukrainian Migrants:

As of February 20, 2023, councils have assisted almost 163,500 Ukrainians to settle in the United Kingdom under the Home for Ukrainian Scheme, which permits UK citizens to underwrite named Ukrainian individuals fleeing Russia’s invasion of the country.
