Strep A: Pharmacists forced ‘to pay £11 for antibiotics’ amid soaring demand due to spike in infections

A senior pharmacist has stated that due to rising demand—partly because of Strep A infections—some pharmacies are now paying £11 for a course of antibiotics.

According to Reena Barai, a community pharmacist contractor and National Pharmacy Association board member, staff employees are "very annoyed" by the shortage of drugs. She further said that the antibiotics, normally costing about £2, are being sold to them at exorbitant prices.

While health secretary Steve Barclay said last week that the government agency was unaware of any antibiotic shortages, he implied that supply might be moved around if general practitioners had problems obtaining them.

Staff at the pharmacy have repeatedly warned that they cannot fill the demand for antibiotics. Sixteen kids have died from invasive Strep A infections in the UK, and the number of cases of scarlet fever has skyrocketed.

Ms. Barai told Sky News that there had been a rise in the demand for antibiotics, particularly those used to treat strep throat.

What is Strep A?

Strep A may cause various health problems, but the first symptoms are usually mild and nonspecific. A sore throat isn't always caused by strep; the pain might come on unexpectedly. Symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat, a high temperature, and swollen, red tonsils that pus streaks or white patches may mark.

If a sore throat persists for more than a week, causes distress, or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as a high temperature or chills, the NHS recommends seeking medical attention. Anyone with an impaired immune system, such as someone undergoing chemotherapy, should visit a doctor.
